HAND DYED WOOL PROCESS RUG HOOKING DEMONSTRATION

Judy was first introduced to rug hooking in 2013 by Lisa Chaloner, the wife of her minister at the church. Her hooking would frequently come up during her husband’s sermons which piqued Judy’s curiosity and she approached her about taking her classes. After learning the basics, Judy was on her way, and was hooked herself to this new art that she had never heard of before.

The cold winters of New England (where traditional rug hooking began) allowed Judy a lot of time to perfect her hooking and learn more about it.

After about a year, Judy wanted to learn to dye the wool herself. She took a dyeing class and found that dyeing wool was as much fun hooking.

Judy is very passionate about her hooking and dyeing and not only loves to show it off but to let others know about this wonderful art.  She has taught classes on Dataw Island through the Visual Arts Club.

Judy moved to Dataw Island outside of Beaufort, from New Hampshire two years ago with Steve, her husband of 30 years. She has 2 daughters, that live in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Quilting with Rulers – Creating Accurate Lines

Whether you quilt traditional pieced blocks and borders, modern geometrics, whole cloth mandalas, or art quilts, the smooth lines that rulers create can enhance your design. Used on domestic, midarm and long arms, there is a ruler for everyone and every machine.

Cathy will cover the tools needed for free motion quilting and ruler work, the wide variety of rulers on the market and there uses, ideas for designing quilt patterns for rulers.

She will show how pieced blocks and borders can be quilted with rulers, how areas of a quilt can be divided for applying a free motion fill, and how whole cloth designs can be created by using rulers. Small trunk show with samples. Power point presentation for close ups of marking and sewn details.

    Cathy Persson Workshop

Bluffton Library, 120 Palmetto Way, Bluffton

    10:00 am to 4:00 pm

    Quilting with Rulers

The Workshop starts with sewing with straight and curved rulers on a nine patch sample. Next you will practice marking blocks and borders to create a more intricate design.

Finally, you will be designing a quilt pattern for large blocks/whole cloth/mandalas, including marking and ruler selection.

Cathy will demo other style rulers. Members can bring any rulers they may want to play with.

    Materials-
You will need a few sandwiches of fabric, batting, backing, basted together. Use light color fabrics and bring contrasting threads, so you can see your quilting.

Two nine patch sandwiches, using 6” solid pieced blocks or use an 18” block with a nine patch of 6” blocks stitched on it (use matching thread). Plus one 12” to 18” sandwich of a mandala or solid fabric. Hand dyes work great for this style.  Cathy will have hand dyed solids and dyed mandalas available for purchase.

    Equipment-
You will need a Ruler Foot for your machine. Check with your dealer or get one from Nancy’s Notions. Bernina owners, newer machines have a Bernina ruler foot option, but older models need a low shank ruler foot and a Bernina adapter, available at Nancy’s Notion.

    Rulers-
If you have rulers, great. If you don’t, Cathy is working on getting a straight and a curve ruler set for the course.  One Straight and one curved ruler will give you plenty of options for the class.

More info on rulers will be available next month.
