Quilts that Celebrate You
Kristine Richardson, Beaufort, SC, will be sharing her quilting story, and the things she has learned about making tee-shirt and miniature quilts, which are at opposite ends of the quilting spectrum.
“My quilting journey started with a gift – a baby quilt with a super soft cotton backing. My daughter named the quilt her “soft bubbie”; that quilt could calm and fear, remove any worry, and halt the flow of tears. When I realized what an incredible gift the quilt was, I began making baby quilts for friends and enjoy hearing stories of the quilts becoming their children’s favorite comfort item.
I started making miniature quilts with a block of the month project, designed to make 5 miniature blocks a month (or one a week). As usual, I started the project after receiving all of the shipments, and quickly developed a love for sewing together the tiny pieces into beautiful 6 inch blocks. At the same time, my oldest son was graduating from high school – so I tackled the boxes of t-shirts that had been saved over 18 years and created my first t-shirt quilt. I fell in love with the large blocks which came together quickly to create a quilt that was full of such wonderful memories. Soon after finishing those two quilts, I decided to start my quilting business, naming it My Soft Bubbie after that very first quilt gift. I made several more miniature quilts, as they were great projects that were relatively quick to finish and provided more quilts to practice longarm quilting. And no t-shirt was safe in our house as I perfected my process and created samples of t-shirt quilts.
