Pieced Quilts:

100 Bed Quilt, Pieced

200 Duet Bed Quilt, Pieced (the work of two quilters)

300 Wall Quilt, Pieced

400 Duet Wall Quilt, Pieced (the work of two quilters)

Appliquéd Quilts: Appliqué predominates over other techniques in amount or effect

500 Bed Quilt, Appliquéd

600 Duet Bed Quilt, Appliquéd (the work of two quilters)

700 Wall Quilt, Appliquéd

800 Duet Wall Quilt, Appliquéd (the work of two quilters)

Mixed Techniques Quilts: A fairly even amount of both piecework, appliqué and other techniques are used to develop the design of the top

900 Bed Quilt, Mixed Techniques

1000 Duet Bed Quilt, Mixed Techniques (the work of two quilters)

1100 Wall Quilt, Mixed Techniques

1200 Duet Wall Quilt, Mixed Techniques (the work of two quilters)

Art Quilts: A quilt of original design created using innovative construction techniques and/or materials

1300 Art Quilt, Original Design - People, Portraits and Figures

1400 Art Quilt, Original Design - Pictorial

1500 Art Quilt, Original design - Abstract

1600 Modern Quilt, Bed & Wall: A quilt generally inspired by modern design and has bold colors, high contrast and simple shapes. Minimalism, asymmetry, expansive negative space, alternate block structures or lack of visible block structure are often part of modern quilt compositions, as are reiterated traditional block and improvisational piecing or appliqué.

1700 Kit Quilt: A quilt made from a pattern and fabrics packaged as a unit for retail sale, including block of the month programs.

1800 Miniature Quilt: A quilt with width and length no more than 24 inches or diameter not greater than 96 inches. All aspects of the quilt are reduced in scale, block, borders, binding and quilting

1900 Other Quilt: Includes quilts where specific techniques or collaborations have been utilized to create the piece to include whole cloth (with or without trapunto), cathedral window, crazy quilts, embellishment quilts, group quilts (3 or more quilters)

2000 Non-Judged: The category for ANY quilt that the maker does not wish to have judged.

2024 Quilt Festival Quilt Entry Definitions

Bed Quilt: A quilt made with the intention of being used on a bed, regardless of size.

Wall Quilt: A quilt made with the intention of being hung on a wall, regardless of size.

Miniature Quilt: A quilt with width and length no more than 24 inches or diameter not greater than 96 inches.

Duet: A quilt that has two (2) persons involved in its completion to include all techniques, as well as the quilting being done by a person other than the maker of the top. Quilts recognized for merit, in "Duet" categories will be awarded two ribbons, one for piecing and one for quilting.

Hand Quilted: Quilted by hand only. No machine quilting.

Stationary Machine Quilted: Quilted using a domestic sewing machine or a sit down mid arm machine. When the quilting is done, the machine stands still and the fabric is moved around under the needle.

Track-Mounted Machine Quilted: Quilted using a sewing machine which rides on a track and is moved around the quilt, while the quilt is held on rollers and does not move.

Pieced Quilt: Piecing predominates over other techniques in amount or effect.

Appliquéd Quilt: Appliqué predominates over the other techniques in amount or effect.

Mixed Techniques Quilt: A fairly even amount of both piecework, appliqué and other techniques are used to develop the design of the top.

Art Quilt: A quilt of original design created using innovative construction techniques and/or materials. No commercial patterns or copies of previous work are utilized in its creation.

  • People, Portraits and Figures: Reflects an original design depicting a recognizable aspect of the human form.
  • Pictorial: Reflects an original design depicting a recognizable image of non-human elements such as scenery found in nature, wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, forests, mountains, plants, trees, flowers, also still life and architecture.
  • Abstract: Reflects the imaginative development of an original, abstract, non-literal composition. The emphasis is on design, color, form, line and innovation.
Modern Quilt: A quilt general inspired by modern design and has bold colors, high contract and simple shapes. Minimalism, asymmetry, expansive negative space, alternate block structures or lack of visible block structure are often a part of modern quilt compositions as are reinterpreted traditional blocks and improvisational piecing or appliqué.

Kit Quilt: A quilt made from a pattern and fabrics packaged as a unit for retail sale, including block of the month programs. Quilt from this category will not be eligible for "Best of Show" or "Best Use of Color" consideration.

Miniature Quilt: A quilt with width and length no more than 24 inches, or diameter not greater than 96 inches. All aspects of the quilt are reduced in scale, blocks, borders, binding and quilting.

Other Quilt: Includes quilts where specific techniques or collaborations have been utilized to create the piece to include whole cloth (with or without trapunto), cathedral window, modern quilts, embellishment quilts, group quilts (3 or more quilters).

Non-Judged: The category for ANY quilt that the maker does not wish to have judged.
