Here is the South Carolina Quilt that we made during the Welcome to Paradise Quilt Festival.  This quilt is to mark The 250th birthday celebration of America.  Did you know that South Carolina was the 8th colony of the original 13?   We are calling It Palmetto State Number 8


America’s Birthday Quilt Display Project

250th Birthday July 4, 2026

  Calling all quilters to be a part of this Historic Quilting Event

 Quilting is the quintessential American art form. With that, we invite youto make a quilt to celebrate America’s birthday in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

 The theme of this quilt event:   E Pluribus Unum- Out of Many, One.

 These quilts will be hung on the outside wall of Fredericksburg Area Museum (FAM) facing Market Square for several days.  It could rain so keep that in mind as you choose fabrics.

 If the outside walls of FAM get filled, we will then display quilts down the alley leading up to Market Square off Caroline St. and the Fredericksburg Visitor Center.

 How To Submit Your Quilt:

 Your quilt can be a design of any aspect of American history or American culture.

 • Quilt size is 3’x3’ only.  You may enter as many quilts as you like.

 • Do not add batting to your quilt, if it rains, it will make quilt heavy.  Long Arming may not be needed either.  

 • 3 inch sleeve across the top is required for hanging.

 • Quilts will be displayed as high as 30 feet, small details might not get noticed. 

 • Quilts will be due June 14,, 2026.

 • Write your name, email and phone number on paper with ink or Sharpie. Place paper into a snack size ziplock bag and seal the bag. Sew or safety pin SEALED ziplock on the back of your quilt under the 3 inch sleeve.  Remember, it could rain. That is why they are in zip lock bags.

 • Quilts will be dropped off or mailed before June 14, 2026 to an address to be determined.

We are in for a treat!  We will be learning from our very own Award Winning Wendy Analla on THURSDAY May 21 from 10:15a to 2:00p at island Lutheran Church. 

This is a workshop to learn how to paint on Fabric.  She will be giving us her award winning technique of painting on fabric any how to create you very own unique motifs.  (Bring your lunch)

    • DMC Floss 801
    • A Fat Quarter of Light Brown
    • A Fat. Quarter of Pale Yellow
    • Small paper Scissors
    • Small Fabric Scissors
    • A small sheet of Freezer paper

    NOTE:  This the WORKSHOP class is on Thursday and the Lecture/Quilt Festival Review will be on Friday at Palmetto Electric New River.

    It is with pleasure that we are offering in June a Lecture and Workshop that will take us back to our roots.

    On June 18 we will hear members and guests will hear a brief review of the history of indigo in SC, see illustrations of seed to dye indigo processing, then explore Shibori techniques to bind and dye their own unique silk scarf. 

    Scarf Size is 14x72 inches

     Lydia Beason’s captivating textile art work is lovingly, individually designed and hand dyed with natural plant indigo. Her work is crafted using intricate shibori techniques with indigo harvested from her garden beds (as long as that supply lasts!). Her process is deeply rooted in the local historical and cultural significance of the indigo plant. Inspiration is drawn from the lush Low Country landscape, sea and sky.

    She utilizes a diverse range of mediums including silk, cotton, and linen dyeing, linocut, collage, and pigment painting to elevate the beauty and complexity of her indigo blue art. As a juried artist and award winner, Lydia’s art has been featured in galleries, podcasts, magazines, and television broadcasts. She shares her passion through workshops with community groups, schools, and USCB. She was recently honored to be named the Artist in Residence for the Beaufort County Libraries.

    Lydia’s small business, Island Indigo, donates proceeds to brain cancer research, a cause near and dear to her heart. The cognitive and physical therapy of her art have allowed her to find purpose through her battle with brain cancer.

    Our Low Country Roots

    Hosted By Lydia Beason 

    On June 19 our workshop will be held at the Art League of Hilton Head Academy. 106 Cordillo Parkway Hilton Head Is., SC from 10 - noon.  Participants will be provided a scarf. The instructor will share, instruction, tools and indigo dye needed to complete the project. 

    You can either do a Silk scarf or a Cotton Scarf.  Class price varies.  Sign up for the type of scarf you would like to dye. 

    Indigo dyeing class cotton scarves for $75.

    The long cotton scarves are 14” x 72” with fringe. Or they could do a plain cotton square scarf (bandana) 21 x 21.

    So when you sign up for the workshop choose either the cotton scarf offering or the silk scarf offering.

    40 Fat Quarters Quilt

    with Mary Willis PQG member




    This quilt is constructed with 2-1/2” strips from 40 different fat quarters 18” x 22”. (You can use yardage, but scraps will not work unless you have 6 – 2-1/2” strips of each fabric, at least 16” long.) I have made this quilt twice. Once with Halloween fat quarters and once with 40 different solid color fat quarters. You’re looking for contrast with your fat quarters. You’ll want to choose a variety of lights and darks, patterns and scale. I think it could be fun with Red, White and Blue, Christmas, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Purple and Green, Black, White and Gray, etc. Use your imagination and have fun picking your fat quarters. Following the instructions, you will sew six panels together with up rows and down rows resulting in a quilt that measures approximately 72” x 78”.     Supply list:

    40 Fat Quarters

    Sewing machine with ¼” foot

    Rotary cutter with a new blade, cutting mat, and rulers

    Optional but very useful – Stripology XL Ruler by Gudrun Erla of GE designs, or June Tailor Shape Cut Plus Ruler

    Cotton thread, seam ripper, pins, scissors etc.

    Iron and ironing mat (pressing direction is key for this quilt so all of your seams will nest)

    Paper labels marked A, B, C, D, E, F.

    Another set of paper labels marked 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

    **Come to class with Six -- 2-1/2” strips from each of your 40 fat quarters ready to sew.**

    This class will create a foundation crazy quilt block.

    Project

    Crazy Modern is a fresh interpretation of the crazy quilts of the early 1900’s. Learn the basics of foundation piecing, use up your scraps, and expand your stitch repertoire with decorative stitches on your sewing machine.

    41 5” squares

    3½ yd muslin for foundation piecing.

    2 yd for borders

    4½ yd backing

    3 yd of a variety of scraps and strings that coordinate with 5” squares

    Crazy Modern Pattern

    Stitch tip: Gather strips and scraps in colors that coordinate with the charm pack, but don't worry about matching exactly. You are creating a color controlled scrappy quilt!

ABOUT PQG

The Palmetto Quilt Guild, Incorporated is a South Carolina nonprofit corporation dedicated to promoting and preserving the art of quilting through our educational and charitable activities.    

Our Purpose:  Promote and preserve the art of quilting; Educate the membership on the history of quilting, its intricacies and ongoing evolution, and provide the opportunity for education, communication and participation to enhance the member’s enjoyment in the art of quilting; Promote the art and craft of quilting to the general public by increasing awareness of quilt history, design, and preservation through education and exhibits.

We have 10 membership meetings a year, which are open to the public, and feature nationally-known speakers who share their quilting knowledge and skills through our workshop program.  Guests are welcome!

Members get together more informally through our various Bees. To increase awareness in the quilting arts, the Guild presents a judged Quilt Festival with over 125 quilts on display every two years.

The Palmetto Quilt Guild offers a wonderful opportunity for beginner to experienced quilters to share a common passion for the art of quilting. We welcome new members!
